About ICMR

For over two decades, the International Conference on Mammoths and Their Relatives (ICMR) has served as the premier global forum for researchers studying proboscideans, their ecosystems, and their evolutionary history.

Since its inception in 1995 (Saint Petersburg, Russia), ICMR has connected scientists across continents—from Rotterdam (1999) to Dawson City (2003), Yakutsk (2007), France (2010), Greece (2014), Taiwan (2017), and most recently in a virtual format (2021).

In 2026, this landmark conference will make history by convening for the first time in Africa—the evolutionary birthplace of proboscideans.

In 2026, this landmark conference will make history by convening for the first time in Africa the evolutionary birthplace of proboscideans hosted at the National Museums of Kenya (NMK) in Nairobi.

This milestone event celebrates both the scientific and symbolic importance of Africa in understanding these magnificent creatures, from their origins to their extinction. We present groundbreaking research on mammoths, mastodons, and other proboscideans in a dynamic, interdisciplinary setting.

Join us in Nairobi, January 2026, for an unparalleled scientific and cultural experience in the heart of proboscidean evolution!
